Know Your Market Training
Information about the training
The Walker Institute is delivering the ‘Know Your Market’ training via the Walker Academy capacity building platform. Our work on the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture (SFSA) project suggests that there is a gap between the providers of crop insurance in Bangladesh, and the smallholder farmers who make up potential market for these products.
For this reason, we have created a training programme for actuaries and other stakeholders that focuses on information and approaches that will help insurance providers design and target the right products based on a better understanding of smallholder livelihoods. The training has two parts which are covered with equal emphasis:
Quantitative dimensions: Understanding the different income streams that make up a smallholder’s livelihood, and how climate risk and uncertainty can impact on this Familiarisation with relevant research tools.
Qualitative dimensions: Understanding ‘My climate risk’. This includes communication skills, active listening and group exercises, e.g. putting yourself in the smallholder’s shoes by creating ‘causal networks’ – that result in either adopting crop insurance, or choosing not to take this up.
The training is made up of five 2.5-hour sessions involving a mix of interactive on-line activities and self-directed learning.
