Event Details:

  • Date: Saturday, 17th May 2025
  • Time: 12:00 PM – 17:00 PM
  • Location: University of Reading, Whiteknights Campus

The University or Reading invited our local community, staff, students and Alumni for another family-friendly extravaganza on Whiteknights Campus.

At the University of Reading’s Community Festival on Saturday, 17 May 2025, the Walker Institute made a vibrant contribution by engaging the local community in conversations around climate adaptation and resilience. Set against the lively backdrop of Whiteknights Campus, the Institute’s stand served as a hub for dialogue, where researchers and two dedicated volunteers, Eme Dean-Lewis and Lucia Snyderman both SCENARIO DTP PhD researchers, welcomed festivalgoers of all ages. The team showcased the Institute’s pioneering work on climate risk and adaptation strategies, using interactive displays and real-world examples to highlight how climate science can inform local and global decision-making. Their presence underscored the Institute’s mission to place people and place at the heart of climate research, fostering a deeper understanding of how communities like Reading can adapt to a changing climate.

The Walker Institute’s engagement extended beyond information-sharing—it was a collaborative exchange with the wider Reading community. Visitors to the stand included local residents, alumni, students, and representatives from community groups and small businesses. The volunteers played a crucial role in facilitating these conversations, helping to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible insights. Their efforts contributed to a broader festival atmosphere that celebrated learning, creativity, and community spirit, with activities ranging from live music and theatre to workshops and street food. The Walker Institute’s participation exemplified the University’s commitment to connecting research with real-world impact, making science approachable and relevant to everyday lives.
