The Himalayan University Consortium (HUC) and The Walker Institute are excited to announce their collaboration on the new Women Science Leaders Interdisciplinary Network. This initiative aims to empower women in science by fostering a supportive environment for interdisciplinary research and leadership. By combining the strengths of HUC’s extensive network in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region and The Walker Institute’s expertise in climate resilience, this partnership will drive innovative solutions to global challenges.
The Women Science Leaders Interdisciplinary Network is designed to promote global mobilisation and interdisciplinary thought leadership
Through this network, women scientists will have access to resources, mentorship, and collaborative opportunities that transcend geographical and disciplinary boundaries. This initiative will not only enhance the visibility of women in science but also contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for pressing environmental and societal issues.
Together, HUC and The Walker Institute are committed to creating a platform that supports the growth and development of women leaders in science. By leveraging their combined expertise and resources, they aim to build a community that fosters innovation, resilience, and global impact. This collaboration underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex challenges and highlights the critical role of women in driving scientific progress and sustainable development.

Dr Yan Ren
Associate Professor
Lanzhou Unviversity
Lanzhou city, Gansu Province China
Dr Ren’s research focuses on boundary layer turbulence and its role in pollution dispersion and climate processes, particularly weak and intermittent turbulence in the stable boundary layer. At Lanzhou University, she works as an Associate Professor, leading research projects and teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses on boundary layer meteorology.
“My visit to the Walker Institute at the University of Reading has expanded my interdisciplinary perspective, deepened my understanding of climate-related applications, and helped me build valuable international collaborations.”
After returning to China, she will focus on improving turbulence parameterization schemes in air pollution, weather, and climate models, and applying these advances to real atmospheric environments, contributing to practical issues of public concern such as air pollution warnings, extreme weather forecasting, and climate change projections.
Dr. Jamir is a food systems scientist specializing in the study of indigenous mountain communities and their food systems in the face of climate change and sustainable development challenges. As the Director and Founder of the Native Foodscape Foundation, her work encompasses extensive research and training initiatives focused on climate resilience and the sustainability of food systems.
“Since 2016, I have engaged with the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC), gaining insights into sustainability issues and fostering collaborations with researchers both within and beyond the Hindu Kush Himalaya region. These partnerships have enhanced my professional development and research expertise, supporting my growth in the academic field.”
“I was introduced to researchers at Walker institute, University of Reading through HUC. I have had the privilege of delivering guest lectures both in virtual settings and in-person. These visits and engagments have fostered collaborative relationships with researchers not only within the institute but throughout the University of Reading. These collaborations have centered on advancing research and training initiatives aimed at building stakeholder capacity in the Himalayan region, particularly within the Northeastern states of India.“

Future efforts will focus on enhancing research networking and foster meaningful collaboration by leveraging the expertise and resources of the Walker Institute alongside researchers based in mountainous regions.
